Cutout
2023-2024
Found footage photographs, digital manipulation.
Cutout is a photographic series that centers on visual absence as a method of ecological reflection. Using found images of landscapes sourced from digital archives and screenshots, Putz digitally removes the plants – often extinct or endangered – that once populated these spaces.
Through this act of digital erasure, Cutouts makes visible what is no longer there. The missing species become the focal point precisely through their absence, while the empty spaces speak to a broader condition of ecological loss, memory, and the failure of preservation systems – biological and digital.
